A Committee Formed to Investigate Brick's Response to the Recent Blizzard

The Brick Patch article, Committee Will Investigate Brick's Blizzard Response, discloses that the township council has created a committee charged with the responsibility to investigate reactions to the recent blizzard. It will also suggest measures leading to improvements in the future. The committee will be headed by Councilman Michael Thulen.

The final town council meeting of the year was held on Friday, December 31st and was more highly attended and more contentious than usual. Town residents were highly critical of the township's snow removal efforts. Mayor Acropolis explained that during the storm disabled vehicles amounted to four fire trucks, 11 ambulances and 17 township-owned trucks. However, he was hopeful that the township could be reimbursed for as much as 75 percent of expenses incurred if New Jersey is declared a disaster area by the federal government.

Walter A. Miller Remodelers- a Brick Based Home Remodeling Business

In a town as large as Brick you are likely to find some outstanding businesses whose services can address needs you have. One such business in this town is Walter A. Miller Remodelers. I am personally acquainted with the business proprietor Walter Miller. He is technically proficient at his craft, an able business operator and has personal integrity. That's a combination that has led to satisfied customers.

The company website features a useful information section, containing a sidebar with navigation options, allowing one to access detailed information about topics of interest. Roofing is one such topic. Within the topic heading is a link to the website of GAF Materials Corporation, the largest manufacturer of residential roofing in North America. You are able to explore that company's site within the Walter A. Miller Remodelers site. The Complete Roofing System section contains product information. If you want to become familiar with GAF's product line, so as to be able to match your needs with their products, this is a good reference point.

Of course viewers are provided with roofing shingle options encompassing shingles for those with tight budgets. More upscale shingles are also available. Factory applied adhesive strips are a feature of GAF's Pre-cut starter strip shingles. The company indicates these shingles "will speed installation time while helping to prevent shingle blow-offs."

GAF has a product line described as leak barriers especially suited for vulnerable areas. Watertight seals, which prevent future repair costs due to leaks, are intended. Product options include StormGuard, WeatherWatch, WeatherWatch XT, StormFlash and UnderRoof 2. Which ones might be used in connection with your roofing job could be determined by an expert roofing consultant, able to assess your needs and budget.

November ballot will Include budgetary choices

Brick council to poll public on service cuts, is the title of an APP.com article. The article tells of an intent to place on the November Brick ballot questions related to budget cuts town residents are willing to make. The voting results will not be binding on the Township Council. However, if property taxes increase following a disregard of the will of voters to cut expenditures, the effect could be a loss of jobs for offending Council members.

Reform Suggestions

For those interested in looking at recent reform recommendations made in New Jersey prior to Christie becoming governor take a look at the NJLM article The Local Take on the Governor's Benefit Review Task Force Recommendations and the Corrections of Pension Errors Report. The latter report contains this remark:

The Task Force took a partial look at age of retirement without recognizing the basic problem. The Federal Social Security System years ago recognized extended longevity of individuals and changed the full retirement age. The fact that Americans are living longer is well recognized and something all pension systems should deal with on a prospective basis. Any recognition should apply across the board. For example, the State Police Retirement System permits officers to retire after 20 years of service at 50% pay regardless of age. The results of such a liberal and rich benefit program has resulted in 8.2 retired officers for every 10 officers working. In the next five years, there will be as many retired officers, for which the State must fund a full pension, as there are working officers. Most all of the retired State Police take another full time job after retirement while collecting a state pension. This same situation is resulting in the Police and Fire Retirement System. Without a minimum age before one is eligible for retirement, the accrued liabilities and funding problems continue to grow exponentially. The Task Force neglected to recognize the funding problems associated with the State Police Retirement System, the PFRS, Judicial and other retirement systems where the age restrictions if any at all are much lower than the age requirements for PERS and TPAF. The League suggests a new retirement age be established for all systems on a prospective basis. The Task Force which accused the Legislature of using gimmicks to solve problems attempted the same approach relative to PERS and TPAF while ignoring the other systems. The League believes there should be uniform and equal standards which apply and are implemented for all systems
