A Unique Music Class in Brick Schools
An article in the October 8, 2009 edition of the Community Reporter had a front page article titled: Unique harmony Music project places students and teachers in the same class. It tells of a program which places students and teachers in the same music class teaching them how to play the violin. Abby Schlabor initiated this unique violin class at both the Osbornville and Emma Havens Young elementary schools. Abby Schlabor recently graduated from the Columbia University Teacher's College. She stands in front of a class where adults can be seen sitting next to elementary aged students. Schlabor analyzes the results of the project in a paper titled Hegemony on Its Head: An Intergenerational Project and Research Study Inviting Faculty and Staff Into the Elementary Band Program. This paper will be presented at an upcoming December convention of the New York School Music Association.
